EXCLUSIVE: Alan Wright will arrive this Friday after Sydney FC agreed a deal last night that will see the English defender trial with the side for a week.
FC supremo Branko Culina will assess the former English premier league winner beginning a week today ahead of the Adelaide United round nine home match.
Wright, who turned 36 on September 28, was released by Sheffield United last May after the club was relegated from the English premier league. He'd been at Bramall Lane since 2004.
The defender is said to be looking forward to showing Sydney FC what he can do as a left back who can get forward.
If the deal goes ahead to sign Wright till the end of the A-League – and it appears likely it will – it will scupper any chance of Alvin Ceccoli returning to the club in the short-term from the Japanese J2 league.
Last season, the popular Wright was loaned out to a number of clubs, including promoted championship side Derby County.
Wright's main club was Aston Villa, where he made 260 appearances over eight years. He signed at Villa Park in 1995 from Blackburn Rovers, where he'd won a premier league medal alongside Socceroo Robbie Slater.
Despite 620 plus league and cup appearances in English football as a defender, Wright has never been sent off.
The 162 cm defender has received glowing references from former Manchester United legend Brian Kidd, who is assistant coach at Brammall Lane.
Wright has previously visited Australia on holiday and has family in this country. The deal has been arranged through Richie Hinton from the ESP agency.
