Western Sydney Wanderers defender Daniel Georgievski admits that his team were still feeling the exhaustion from last week’s derby victory – and says that the main goal against Brisbane Roar last night was to not lose.
Georgievski says that although the result was a fair reflection of the game, with both teams having several chances, the squad is just happy to have maintained a clean sheet and kept things tight defensively.
“We were just on a little bit of a hangover from the last game and I think today as long as we didn’t concede defensively that’s a positive sign,” he told FTBL.
"Our main aim at half-time that we’re going to stick to our structure but if it doesn’t go in, don’t let it go in on the other end."
The former Newcastle Jets man says there is a real team spirit in the dressing room where everyone puts a shift in on both ends of the pitch, best seen by the blocked shots of Kwame Yeboah and Alexander Meier.
“That’s a desire to not lose, that’s a perfect formula for any team," he said. "If you can’t score at least you can defend well and the fact that Yeboah blocked a shot was pretty much going in and he’s a winger, and Meier as well.
“That just goes to shows that even as an attacker, we want to defend. We’ll be there no matter what."
Personally, Georgievski has had to change his own game following injuries to some of his defensive team mates as he moves back to the right after playing most of his A-League career on the left.
Although he is familiar playing on the right side of defence after his time in Europe, he admits there is still plenty of room for improvement.
He added: “Going onto the right, you’re blocking crosses with your other foot and sometimes I get caught up in it and it becomes natural to me.
"You can’t just go through the motions and that’s what I have to do to overcome and remember it and my body will do the rest.”
