Barca went into the home match against Sporting on the back of their worst domestic start in 35 years having lost to newly-promoted Numancia and drawn at home to Racing Santander in their first two games, scoring just one goal in the process.

Prior to those two contests Barca had also lost to Wisla Krakow in a Champions League qualifier, and the pressure was starting to grow on new coach Pep Guardiola.

"We needed a win," admitted Xavi, who scored Barca's third goal late on to secure the points against Sporting.

"The team felt comfortable, created chances and the only thing missing was a better success ratio in front of goal.

"The team deserved the win because we played good football."

Striker Samuel Eto'o also got on the scoresheet from the penalty spot, but he was more pleased that the team won.

"The best thing of all is the win. I converted a penalty which increased the lead but the most important thing was the win," he said.

"We had gone three games playing quite well but lacking a win. It's important to gain confidence and start moving forwards."

Next up for Barca is Sunday's league trip to promoted Sporting Gijon, and striker Thierry Henry is keen for his side to build on their European victory in that match.

"It was an important win and we have to continue in Gijon," said the Frenchman.

"When you win like that it gives you more confidence. The fans enjoy it when we do our jobs well."
