Melbourne Victory have been held to a 1-1 draw by Brisbane Roar on home turf, thanks to some sloppy defending and a very grateful Brett Holman.
Bloody faces, flying seat covers and two goals in the dying embers, the contest at Etihad Stadium had a bit of everything. But despite their best efforts, both sides remain winless after six games of the season.
Besart Berisha had given Victory the lead with less than 10 minutes remaining after a brilliant run from Christian Theoharous, but Kevin Muscat’s men couldn’t hold on – Thomas Deng allowing Holman to breeze past him to latch onto a Jack Hingert cross and tap in the equaliser.
To everyone’s surprise both sides have underperformed this season, and both performed like teams low on confidence for the majority of the match. Jamie Young was the real hero – partly because he saved a Maccarone bullet at his own keeper.
But friendly fire aside, Brisbane will be content with a point in Melbourne. Given Melbourne’s decline this season, that attitude may not last much longer.
“The team really put in from the moment we went behind,” Young said.
“We need to keep working like we did today. We’ll turn the tide, we keep asking questions of the opposition and we work hard.”
Another winless result means John Aloisi remains under pressure, but he continues to say he views positives in the performances.
“(The comeback) shows that we’ve got great character, we never give up. We’ll keep on fighting, growing and improving.
“This team’s got a lot to offer."
While Brisbane are remaining positive, Besart Berisha was livid at the result.
“(I'm) very disappointed, again there was just six minutes to go, it’s just not good enough.
“I’m happy to be back and I try to help the club. But that’s just not good enough, you cannot be happy with this.”
