The Westfield Young Matildas today departed for Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday to compete in the AFC U19 Women’s Championship 2011 as they battle it out with five other Asian countries to qualify for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup 2012.
Melbourne Victory striker Caitlin Friend was a late call-up into the squad following an injury to Adelaide United’s Katrina Gorry.
The 23-player squad will play their first match against hosts Vietnam on October 6 at Thong Nhat Stadium.
The tournament, which acts as the qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2012 in Uzbekistan, will be played over a 10 day period (October 6-16) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in a round robin style tournament against China, DPR Korea, Korea Republic, Japan and hosts Vietnam.
Meanwhile the Westfield U17 Australian Women’s National Team have also departed today for New Zealand to play three friendly matches in Auckland – see attached for more details.
