Scotland-based McGowan, 21, was one of 22 Australians playing in Europe selected for the training camp which will assemble in Moenchengladbach next week.

McGowan, an Australia youth international who is eligible for the 2012 Olympics, is contracted with Scottish Premier League high-flyers Hearts but is currently on loan at Partick Thistle.

The SASI product has been with Hearts since 2006 and told au.fourfourtwo.com the opportunity to link up with Olyroos and Socceroos coaches was refreshing for European-based Australians

“Sometimes when you are overseas you could feel lost, or feel like 'I'm not sure if they know what I'm doing',” McGowan said.

“It's a chance to touch base and get familiar with them. We get to see them, they get to see us.”

Australia recently lost left-sided Besiktas defender Ersan Gulum to the Turkish national team, with the player citing a lack of contact from the Socceroos set-up for his decision.

McGowan said the FFA had been in regular contact with him in Scotland, particularly Socceroos team manager Simon Roberts.

“They know where you're playing and they're always interested, even if it's sending an email or a text just to see how you're going, making sure you're not injured,” he said.

“It pays off when you get rewards like this.”

McGowan, who can play in midfield or defence, added the chance to meet up with Olyroos coach Aurelio Vidmar and Socceroos coach Holger Osieck was one he was going to relish.

“I'm really looking forward to going there and trying to impress,” he said.

“It's a chance for a lot of the overseas boys to meet Vidmar. Many haven't met him since he became Olyroos coach.

“There's been a couple of camps where he's taken mostly the A-League boys. Also a few of us haven't met the national team coach either.”
