Aaron Mooy opened the scoring but Brazil equalised before the break and netted two in the second half to secure top spot in Group E while leaving Australia winless from three games.

Qantas Young Socceroos coach Jan Versleijen made several changes and they paid off in the early stages.

Andrew Redmayne, Sam Munro and Sam Gallagher made their first appearances of the tournament, Rhyan Grant made his first start while Ryan McGowan and Jason Hoffman returned to the starting XI.  Dean Bouzanis, Mitch Nichols, Matthew Jurman, Daniel Mullen, Luke DeVere and Sean Rooney made way, while Tahj Minniecon was unavailable due to suspension.

The Brazilians rested five players who had received yellow cards coming into the match - Douglas, Dalton, Rafael Toloi, Giuliano and Souza - unwilling to run the risk of losing the to suspension for the round of 16.

Mooy opened the scoring when his fierce free kick from distance eluded Brazilian keeper Rafael and spilled into the net after just 14 minutes.

Minutes later, Kofi Danning could have doubled the lead when he found himself free inside the box but he hit the outside of the post.

But Brazil made Australia pay in the 34th minute when Ciro cut in from the left and struck a vicious left-foot shot past Redmayne, thanks to some assistance from the upright.

Mooy again caused Rafael dramas after the break with another free kick that bounced in front of him but Brazil cleared the danger.

They then took the lead in the 62nd minute when midfielder Douglas Costa found space in the box to control before slotting the ball home.

Paulo Henrique put the result beyond doubt in the 81st minute when he curled a delightful left-foot strike into the back of the net after it hit the underside of the crossbar.

Substitute Nathan Elasi had a late chance but blasted just over the bar, while another of his shots was saved by the keeper.

Despite the disappointing results, Versleijen was proud of his players' effort and particularly the performance against Brazil.

"We came to this tournament to try and qualify for the next round but we didn't achieve that,'' Versleijen said.  "We got some good things out of the tournament and this experience was a very fruitful one for the whole team and I was very happy with the way we played today.

"The lead up for this tournament lasted two years and we played a lot of internationals, which was already a good experience but the three games here in Egypt showed what kind of things are needed at World Cup level.

"The biggest thing we learnt was if you make mistakes at this level, straight away you will be punished.

"All three goals we conceded against Brazil came from us losing possession and they were very good on the counter.

"We wanted to win today because we still had a chance of getting through, and we played well and started the game very well, but Brazil are a team that makes you do certain things, they are a quality side.

"This whole tournament, from a football point of view, is very positive. All the teams try and play football and not just coming here to defend and that's a very positive development in international football.''

Goalscorer Mooy said the players applied themselves for three weeks for little reward.  "Over the two weeks we've been here we've worked really hard at training and we've tried to play football but unfortunately the results weren't that positive but we all tried our best so I'm happy with all my teammates,'' Mooy said.

Brazilian coach Rogerio also paid tribute to the Qantas Young Socceroos after the match, praising them for turning up and playing as opposed to sitting back and playing on the counter attack.
