THE Young Socceroos have secured third place at the Terborg Toernooi after beating Liverpool in a penalty shoot-out.
Having being edged out 2-0 in the semi-final by Ajax, the Australians faced the losers from the other semi-final, Liverpool.
The match ended 0-0 so it was decided by penalties. The Young Socceroos held their nerve to triumph 4-2. Adelaide United keeper Mark Birighitti saved one effort with Liverpool also hitting the post with another effort.
Bolton Wanderers midfielder Aaron Mooy was named player of the tournament.
Coach Jan Versleijen told the FFA's official website: "It was a great result to finish third in the tournament; we built up from the start of the matches and improved as we continued.
"I had the opportunity to play a lot of players and everybody got the opportunity to play which was important. To have Aaron Mooy named as player of the tournament is a great achievement for him in what is a very famous and high standard tournament."
Ajax defeated Mineiro 2-0 in the final. The Young Socceroos will now play Egypt on Tuesday.
