FOOTBALL Federation Australia have launched an investigation into reports Young Socceroo Kerem Bulut has been charged with street gang offences by NSW Police.
Sydney's Daily Telegraph this afternoon reported Bulut, 18, of Berala was arrested yesterday and charged with a range of offences.
He was one of five arrested, including one underage suspect, and questioned over several incidents.
On August 15, four of the five arrested yesterday were said to have been involved in an unprovoked attack on two men in a car park at Auburn involving the use of knives.
The alleged victims escaped with one suffering a stab wound to the head and the other with injuries to the torso and leg, according to police.
Bulut played for his Czech Republic side FK Mlada Boleslav against FK Brno in a domestic Czech Liga game the following day, August 16.
However in a statement released yesterday by NSW Police it is alleged that a group including Bulut confronted the same alleged victims as the August attack with three of his four co-accused when they chanced to run into them in Bondi.
This time they reportedly robbed their victims' iPhone and wallets, before they again ran into one of the alleged victims in Sydney city centre the following night, where the group including Bulut is again alleged to have threatened them.
Flemington LAC Commander Det Superintendent Phil Rogerson said he believed the teenagers are all members or associates of a street group in Auburn.
“We are concerned at increasing acts of violence and anti-social behaviour involving some young people in this local community,” Supt Rogerson said.
“Police and the local community of Auburn will make it clear that we will not stand for criminal, anti-social or violent behaviour by anyone, including young people.
“Police have engaged and will continue to engage with local community leaders, youth and religious leaders to discuss and find ways to dissuade youngsters from a life of crime.
“However, neither we nor the law-abiding members of this community will put up with anyone who chooses to break the law.”
Four of the five accused were expected to appear before Burwood Court later today, while the underage suspect was to go before Parramatta Children's Court.
Bulut was one of the stars of Sydney's youth side last season before he was snapped up by the Czech side where he instantly slotted into the first team.
He shone for the Young Socceroos in the recent AFC tournament which won the youngsters a slot in the U20 World Cup next year. He is tipped as possible key Socceroo striker in future years.
Heavily tattooed Bulut flew home to Sydney after winning the Golden Boot at the AFC U19 Championships in China and is believed to have stayed here since, but shunned the spotlight while here.
Today the FFA said they were seeking clarification on events before commenting or acting further.
A spokesman added: "This matter has just been brought to our attention and we are now endeavouring to get hold of the facts.
"Clearly it is in the hands of the police and before the courts so were are not in a position to comment publicly.
"However, we will be closely monitoring the situation and consider our options at the appropriate time."
- At Burwood Local Court on Thursday, Magistrate Christopher Longley was told Bulut was a member of the gang MBM, or Muslim Brotherhood Militants. Bulut was released on bail this afternoon, subject to several conditions, and was forced to surrender his passport, although he was told he could temporarily have his passport returned if he gives the court an unspecified amount of money. The matter was adjourned until January 24.
