Western Sydney Wanderers have notched their first home win of the season after accounting for the Newcastle Jets 2-0 at a humid Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday.
A maiden A-League goal for Lachlan Scott (44') put the Wanderers in front on the cusp of half time before fellow young gun Jaushua Sotirio (68') sealed the club's first three points of 2017 and snapped a demoralising six-game winless streak.
The showdown was shaping as a key clash in the race for the top six with both teams sitting just outside the calculations.
And, it started at a frenetic pace, with Tony Popovic’s side creating a couple of chances inside the opening couple of minutes, while Andrew Nabbout and Ma Leilei were both lively for the Jets.
In all there was a whopping 17 shots on goal in the first 45 minutes – with the last of those proving telling on the scoreboard.
It was a much tighter contest after the break, with the heat no doubt playing a part on proceedings.
The Wanderers were content to preserve their advantage, which Sotirio, 21, extended midway through the half – Newcastle unable to get a foothold in the match thereafter.
The result sees Western Sydney leapfrog Newcastle on the table, with the red and black sitting just outside the top six on goal difference. Meanwhile the visitors dropped to 8th but still just one point off a finals berth.
