BRAZIL great Zico - once in the running to take charge of the Socceroos - has been appointed the coach of Iraq on a one-year deal, the nation's football federation has confirmed.
The 58-year-old, who has previously coached Japan, Fenerbahce and CSKA Moscow, replaces Wolfgang Sidka, who was not offered a new contract.
Zico will take charge of the side with immediate effect as the Iraqis prepare for the next stage of their World Cup qualifying campaign.
Iraq have been drawn alongside China, Jordan and Singapore in Group A in the third round of qualifying, and will face the Jordanians on September 2.
