Sydney, had to do it the hard way at home, coming from a goal down to level the scores 1-1 before winning on penalties 4-2 after extra time.

But Zullo, in his third A-League club since returning from overseas, couldn’t be happier after playing an integral part in the Sky Blues record-breaking 2016/17 campaign.

“Look I’ve said I never really envisaged I’d be a player that would play for more than one or two clubs but that’s how football goes sometimes” Zullo told Fox Sports post-match.

“You need to find – for a lack of a better word – your happy place, you know. And this is an amazing club to be at. Being here this year is so special, it’s a special group.”

Sydney celebrates: Tears, hugs and fireworks

The fringe Socceroo was one of three Brisbane Roar starlets who headed overseas in 2010. Along with Robbie Kruse and Adam Sarota, he was snapped up by Dutch side Utrecht.

But his stint overseas was cruelled by injury.

In 2013 he returned on a one-season loan to Adelaide United, spent a year with Melbourne City (2015-16) before joining Sydney and arguably the best team the A-League has ever seen.

Leaving before Roar’s remarkable A-League reign, the the 28-year-old has had to wait for honours. This season they’ve come in spades with the Sky Blues picking up the Premiership/Championship double.

Zullo added: “It’s taken a while for me to get one so it’s a really special feeling.

“I don’t know where I am right now. It’s just a surreal feeling.”

Little wonder after emerging from a Grand Final dogfight, and what captain Aex Brosque described as the toughest opening 45 of his career.

Zullo agreed but always had faith his teammates, especially goalkeeper Danny Vukovic, would prevail. That’s exactly what happened. Sydney centre back Alex Wilkinson missed a penalty, but when Victory’s Carl Valeri missed from the spot and Vukovic saved Marco Rojas’ effort it was just left for Milos Ninkovic to slot home the winner.

“(Victory) tested us, scored a goal, but no one dropped their head,” Zullo said.

“We all had that belief even when we missed that penalty. We knew Vuka was going to save at least one.

“The whole year’s work culminated in tonight…I’m so proud of my boys.”
