The left-sided 23-year-old hasn't started one game and has only managed four appearances off the bench since Wouters took over at Utrecht in mid October.

Zullo had made half a dozen starts, predominantly at left-back, earlier in the campaign under Erwin Koeman, but has fallen behind Davy Bulthuis under Wouters.

The former Brisbane Roar man, who has nine Socceroos caps and has previously stated his motivation for moving to the Netherlands was to boost his national team hopes, wasn't part of the Australia squad for the recent Saudi Arabia game.

"I am not comfortable with not playing at this stage of my career and the club know that," Zullo told AAP. "They still give me positive input, that is OK ... but at the end of the day I need to play.

"That was always my main goal to play for the Socceroos and to play in a World Cup.

"In order for me to do that I need to be playing matches week in and week out and be in my best condition. Hopefully it gets resolved in the next few months and I get playing again."

Zullo, who has had injury problems this term, may be offered a chance when Utrecht host FC Groningen on Sunday, with Bulthuis suspended.

He added: "Hopefully I will be in line to play this weekend ... (and) I can put in a good performance and stay there for the rest of the season."
