The 65-year-old Beckenbauer announced earlier this month that he would not be standing for re-election next March when his four-year term comes to an end.

Zwanziger today confirmed he will enter the election contest to replace the World Cup-winning player and coach in a bid to ensure continuing German representation on the committee.

"Franz Beckenbauer is a worldwide respected representative of German football who has carried out this role excellently in recent years," said Zwanziger.

"I regret his decision [to step down], but I can understand it.

"The aim of the DFB has got to be to continue to represent our interests on the decisive board of World football. Therefore, I will stand for election."

Zwanziger, a member of UEFA's Executive Board, has informed FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA chief Michel Platini of his intentions, and has received backing from Beckenbauer himself.

"I am glad that he has decided to stand for election, despite all of the additional strains that the post brings with it," said Beckenbauer, who is leaving the job to spend more time with his family.

"Theo Zwanziger is the best solution for German football."

Beckenbauer's replacement will be announced at the UEFA congress on March 22.
