Russia midfielder Alan Dzagoev said he had "ambivalent" impressions of his side's performance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and that Russia could have qualified for the semi-finals.
Russia lost to Croatia 4-3 on penalties in Sochi on Saturday after the match finished 2-2 following extra time and were eliminated from their home tournament.
Earlier, Stanislav Cherchesov's squad had defeated Spain with the match ending in a penalty shootout as well.
"I have ambivalent impressions. On the one hand, we have reached the knockout stage, we have qualified for the last eight, we defeated Spain. On the other hand, the more you have, the more you want. We could have gone further, but that hasn't happened, unfortunately. The [Croatia] match can be called a tragic one," Dzagoev said in an interview that was published on the Russian national football team's Youtube channel.
The 28-year-old praised his teammates and their fans.
"We have a very strong team... I'm sure that this is the reason why we have made it to the last eight and showed a decent performance. Thank you very much to our fans... People didn't believe in us, but we made them believe," Dzagoev added.
Dzagoev sustained a hamstring injury in the World Cup opening match against Saudi Arabia on June 14 and had to sit out Russia's next three games. In the Croatia match, he came on as a substitution in the 102nd minute and scored a goal for his side during the penalty shootout.
"Of course, it's a pity that I've spent so little time on the pitch, but there are always injuries in football," Dzagoev said.
Russia is hosting its first-ever FIFA World Cup, with the final set to be played at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.
