Burnley and England defender James Tarkowski will not play for his country at the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia due to an injury, the footballer's club said Monday.
The 25-year-old was named in England manager Gareth Southgate’s five-man stand-by list. He was training with the team since May 21 but had to leave the training camp to undergo a hernia operation.
"Tarkowski is expected to be fit for the Clarets’ return to pre-season training in early July. England have confirmed there are no plans to call up a replacement defender at this time," the club said in a statement published on their official website.
The defender has made 33 appearances for Burnley this season and earned his only England cap in March, playing all 90 minutes in a 1-1 friendly draw with Italy.
Russia's first-ever FIFA World Cup will take place from June 14 to July 15 in 11 host cities. England were drawn in Group G where they will face Tunisia, Panama and Belgium.
