England’s main goal was not to beat Belgium, but rather to focus on the knockout stage, head coach Gareth Southgate said on Thursday.
Belgium's Adnan Janujaj scored the only goal of the game with a fine left-footed curling effort in the second half.
Belgium and England secured their passage through to the round of 16, where they will face Japan and Colombia, respectively.
“I don’t think that we played poorly at all tonight… We don’t want to lose matches, but the primary objectives we wanted from the evening - we’ve got it… Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and make decisions that, okay, might in some quarters be criticized, but I think everybody understands, and certainly everybody in the dressing room and in our group understands what we tried to do,” Southgate told journalists.
England will face Colombia for a place in the quarter-finals on Tuesday in Moscow.
