Poland, who have been eliminated from the World Cup, have learnt an important but bitter lesson during the tournament, defender Jan Bednarek said on Thursday.
Poland defeated Japan 1-0, but still did not make it into the round of 16.
“We are disappointed, because we wanted to get to the round of 16 at this tournament. We decided to play with pride against Japan to make our fans happy. We wanted to go home with a victory… We learnt a good lesson at the tournament, but a bitter one,” Bednarek told journalists, adding that in the future, Poland will have a stronger team.
Japan advanced to the round of 16 despite having the same number of points and the goal difference as Senegal.
Senegal were knocked out because they received more yellow cards during the tournament than the Japanese.
