MOSCOW, July 8 (Sputnik) - Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov coped with the task he was confronted with at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and should stay in charge of the national team, former USSR striker and 1988 European Championship runner-up Sergey Dmitriev told Sputnik on Sunday.
Russia reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union, but were eliminated from the tournament losing 4-3 on penalties to Croatia in Sochi on Saturday after the match finished 2-2 following extra time. Stanislav Cherchesov started managing the national team in 2016, his contract expires after the 2018 World Cup ends.
"I think that Cherchesov should remain the head coach, because he, of course, coped with the task at the World Cup. Russia played poorly in the pre-World Cup friendlies and people laughed at Cherchesov and the team. After the first game it [the negativity] all disappeared. He gave all of Russia such a joyous occasion. Moreover, we know that Spain and Croatia are top-level teams, and we did not lose to them, " Dmitriev said.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the final set to be played at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
