The Russian national football team thanked defender Yuri Zhirkov following the announcement of his retirement from the team on Tuesday.
"Yuri Zhirkov announced his retirement from the Russian national team. Yuri, thank you for everything," the team posted on their official Twitter account.
34-year-old Zhirkov, who played in three of his side's matches at the World Cup, made his debut for Russia in 2005, scoring two goals in 87 international appearances. He was named in the Euro 2008 Team of the Tournament after helping the team to the semi-finals and was listed as one of the 30 nominees for the Ballon d'Or award, given to the top player in Europe.
Russia bowed out of the World Cup after losing to Croatia on penalties in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
