Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov delivered the official FIFA World Cup ball, the Telstar-18, back to Earth in the descent capsule of the Soyuz MS-07 spacecraft, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Sunday.
The recently appointed head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin came to the Mission Control Center, just outside Moscow, to see the International Space Station crew, namely Shkaplerov, Norishige Kanai and Scott Tingle, return to Earth after spending 168 days at the station.
Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev brought the ball to the station. Now he and his US colleagues Andrew Feustel and Richard Arnold are waiting for the arrival of the next crew on June 8.
The Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft, which will bring the next crew into space, will be launched on the rocket Soyuz-FG, which is decorated with the symbols of the 2018 World Cup.
Previously, Roscosmos published a video featuring Shkaplerov and Artemyev passing the ball to each other on the Roscosmos YouTube channel.
The Telstar-18 ball will be used during the opening match of the World Cup, which gets underway on June 14, with the final to be played on July 15. The hosts have been drawn in Group A along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay.
