A week after Melbourne Victory’s marquee signing of Keisuke Honda, their A-League rivals will be busy looking to strengthen their own squads. Here are five potential free agents that would help any A-League side challenge for the dunny seat.
Yaya Toure

The controversial midfielder is without a club after an eight-year stint at Premier League championship winning side Manchester City. Touted as a potential marquee for an A-League side Toure would bring power and experience to the league. Toure’s agent has even claimed that the Ivorian would be open to earning little in weekly wage at a potential new club. However, Toure would still likely be an expensive target for the A-League after being one of the Premier League’s highest earning players. Despite this, the African would not only attract crowds of football fans but bring the skills to match.
Stephen Ireland
After only managing four games in the last two Premier League seasons, the Irish midfielder finds himself without a club after being released by relegated Stoke City. While it seems the former Manchester City player has been around football forever, he is still only 31 years of age and could offer a degree of poise and control in the middle of the park for any A-League side. Ireland has recently been linked to a move to the Bundesliga but a move to the A-League would instantly add quality to any side looking for a creative playmaker – providing he can rediscover his match fitness after so long with so little gametime.
Claudio Yacob

Following their relegation from the Premier League, West Brom made the decision not to re-sign club favourite Claudio Yacob. The 31-year old has plenty to offer as a holding midfielder with the ability to break up play and offer an extra degree of protection for A-League defenders. The Argentinean was an integral part of The Baggies midfield over his seven years at the club where he appeared in 160 games. Despite only featuring in 18 games last season, Yacob would still step into any A-League midfield and be at home.
