The Reds, one of the A-League’s more successful clubs, parted ways with Dutch head coach Gertjan Verbeek after the current A-League season was put on hold.

The 2019 FFA Cup winners are carefully assessing their options as they plot a way forward in the A-League.

Verbeek departs as Adelaide Utd coach

Adelaide United and coach Gertjan Verbeek have parted ways, the Dutchman citing uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic which has shut down the A-League.

"The club has developed a stringent technical and behavioural criteria, that candidates must satisfy in order to be considered to lead our A-League team in the future," Adelaide CEO Nathan Kosmina said in a statement this week.

"The development of these criteria has been based on established football objectives whilst seeking feedback from key club stakeholders, including past players as well as our members.

The A-League club has a broad fanbase in Adelaide

"The head coach has the greatest impact on the club’s on-field success and is the most visible representative of what Adelaide United means to the South Australian football community.

"It is therefore paramount that we establish what we want to represent, how we want to play, and what we want to achieve as the defining facets of the coach recruitment process."

Playing at arguably the best boutique football stadium in the country, backed in strong fan numbers in a city that has only one A-League club, a strong Reds is good for the A-League and SA. 

"We will not rush to a decision,” added Kosmina. "And the recruitment process to select our new head coach will continue over the coming months."
