Muscat, 37, played his last home game for Victory in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Gamba Osaka after announcing his retirement earlier this year.

The former Rangers and Wolverhampton defender told Fox Sports after the game he was grateful for his decision in 2005 to head back to Australia when he was only 31 and still a regular Socceroo.

“I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm grateful for the fact I came back at an age where I could have some input,” Muscat said.

“But now the legs have gone, I'll be the first to admit I've slowed up a bit in the past 12 or 18 months. I've enjoyed my time here, and I owe this club more than they owe me.”

Muscat added: “It's the longest I've spent at one club. Six seasons and we've had quite a bit of success here. I met a lot of good people from day one and long may it continue.

“We're headed in the right direction at the moment and we just ask for everyone to bear with us and be patient.”

The 51-time Socceroo said he was delighted with the home crowd's response to him in his final home game.

“It's nice. The appreciation I've got for them. I've been here six years and I feel I've endeared myself to the fans here. These fans have been the best since day one and long may it continue,” Muscat said.

On the contest, Muscat said he felt some sense of redemption after responding from their 5-1 loss at Gamba earlier in the tournament but rued missing out on all three points.

“I couldn't be prouder. It was unbelievable. We realise what a good side they are. We went out there with a gameplan and for the majority it worked well,” Muscat said.

“I thought we created the better chances and on reflection I'm a little bit disappointed we didn't nick all three points.”

On redemption against Gamba, Muscat added:. “It was mentioned before the game to go out there and earn some pride. I think they'll be sitting there in the dressing room knowing they've played a game.”
