Bertha Putra steered his effort his 69th-minute effort past Shanghai goalkeeper Zhang Chen to register the win for the Indonesians and the biggest shock of the competition so far this year.

Both teams were still looking for their first point in the competition after losing starts in their respective Group E openers earlier this month.

However, whatever gameplan either team had before the match was swept away by a torrential downpour which began 10 minutes before kick-off and lasted for most of the first half.

Thanks to the heavy conditions, both sides struggled to create chances in the first 45 minutes, with opportunities coming only from long-range efforts or set pieces.

Li Gang's shot from 20 yards out in the 12th minute had Persik goalkeeper Kurnia Sandy scrambling, but the shot was high and wide.

Ronald Fagundez then tested Shenhua custodian Zhang Chen with a 25-yard free-kick.

Although Persik had the lion's share of possession, it was the visitors who had the best chance to break the deadlock a minute before the break.

Yu Tao found space just inside the box, but a timely block by Zainuri saw his effort being deflected for a corner.

That set the tone for the match after the break and it was Yu again who tormented the Persik defence and earned a free-kick in the 59th minute after he was fouled by Danilo just outside the box.

Jiang Kun's scorching drive looked goalbound until Kurnia intervened.

Just as it appeared that the visitors were in the ascendancy, they were undone by a quick Persik break in the 69th minute.

Ronald Fagundez found Kusnul Kurniawan on the right of the Shenhua box who squared the ball to Bertha Putra to steer it past Zhang and into the far corner.

Shenhua poured forward in search of the equaliser and came very close in the 82nd minute when Li Gang saw his header beat Kurnia only to come off the bar.
