Gombau joined Adelaide in July after the resignation of John Kosmina mid-way through last season, with Michael Valkanis taking over as coach for the interim.

And ahead of round one, the former Barcelona youth coach says results are not integral this season as he looks to implement a new style of football at United.

“We want to try to play football,” Gombau told au.fourfourtwo.com. “We want to try to keep the ball and play nice for the people to enjoy.

“But moreover the objective is to create a style for Adelaide that no matter home or away, winning or losing, we always play the same style.

“It is important that we make a basis for the future and that the team learns one style and plays one style and this takes more than winning or losing games.

“But I think our team is ready to start the competition, and we expect that the team will be more strong in two or three months from now.”

Despite most A-League coaches despising the long A-League off-season, Gombau is grateful for the abundance of time he was given to build his squad and implement his new brand of football.

“It’s a long pre-season, but I think it’s good for my first season,” Gombau added. “In this year for us it is perfect because as a new coach I need time to work with the team and I have this time.

“We can change a few things and to implement a new style, so this long pre-season is good for us.”

Gombau has brought with him to Adelaide two former Barcelona youth players in Isaias Sanchez (midfielder) and Sergio Cirio (attacker), and expects them to be a hit in the A-League this season.

“Isaias is a very team work players, while Cirio is quick and last season scored a lot of goals in Spain and I am confident they can be successful in the A-League.”

As for the standard of the league, Gombau has no doubts about its quality.

“When I got here I saw it is a league that is very equal,” he saidr. “It is a league that is growing year by year, a league that anybody can win against anybody and it is a league that the standard is good.”
