Perth Glory deserved the win, showing what an organised team can achieve through discipline and quality players. Liam Reddy signposted so before the match: “All the boys looking sharp and looking to pick up three points”
Scott Galloway and Ryan Kitto gave Adelaide United good width and enterprise when going forward, but the class and sharpness as Liam Reddy stated, players like Chris Ikonomidis and Neil Kilkenny, made the difference for the visitors in the first-half.
Good ball control, brilliant awareness and perfectly weighted range of passes. Both sides showed good energy and pace but it was Perth Glory from a Diego Gastro shot in 35th minute that separated the two sides at half-time.
Contrast to the first-half, Adelaide looked out of ideas in the second: passes weren’t reaching their target, distribution overhit and the most dependable player - Isaias - suffered more than one wayward pass.
The clincher was one such mistake, Andy Keogh picked it up, ran into the penalty area and coolly slotted the ball past Paul Izzo to give Perth Glory a 2-0 win at Hindmarsh Stadium.
ADELAIDE UNITED
Paul Izzo – 7.5
Quality save early on. Couple of poor clearances. Brilliant one-handed save late on in the first half. Couldn’t do anything about Perth's two goals.
Strong save from his near post towards the dying minutes. Brilliant save to deny Keogh another goal in the 90th minute, getting down low to his right.
Scott Galloway – 7.5
Lost the ball in the penalty area. Penetrating run down the left-hand side, solid defensive headers. Fantastic strike from his left foot 20 yards out. Solid defending in the second-half. Honest performance in a team that looked disjointed.
Michael Jakobsen – 7
Decent performance, look tired through the second half.
Michael Marrone – 7.5
Reading the play in defence. Intercepting the through balls brilliantly. Best defending from Adelaide tonight.
Ryan Strain – 6.5
Decent effort on goal but needed to put more on his header. Tried to get forward in the first half but was quiet in the second.
Mirko Boland – 5
First half was okay but nothing to write about. Woeful delivery after a great attacking endeavour from the sub Mileusnic. A couple of reckless tackles. Poor distribution in the second half.
Nathan Konstandopoulos – 5.5
Did very well to win the ball in midfield but let himself down with a sloppy pass, too weighty in the final third. Sharpened up in the defensive third, but again a sloppy touch. Subbed at half-time
Isaias – 6.5
Quality distribution, good range of passing. Sloppy, lazily let himself down through a wayward pass which Andy Keogh picked up and scored. Another poor pass later on, looked flat after conceding the second goal.
Craig Goodwin – 7.5
Linked well with Galloway, crisp one touch passing. Decision making late in the first-half a little bit lazy, went backwards when he should be moving the ball forward.
Lazy distribution in the final third toward the closing stages of the first-half. Powerful strike but straight at the keeper. Couple of frustrated tackles.
Jordy Thomassen – 6
Working hard up front. Had a golden opportunity to get his first Adelaide goal but a tame shot along the ground straight into the waiting arms of the keeper. Subbed 60th minute
Ryan Kitto – 7
Decent runs down the right-hand side. Solid defensive duties chasing back with good pace. Worked hard. Subbed 82nd minute
SUBS
Ken Ilso – 3
On for Jordy Thomassen. No impact should off stayed on the bench.
Nikola Mileusnic – 6
On for Nathan Konstandopoulos. Fantastic pace, driving runs in the final third. Needs match fitness after being out through injury.
Carlo Armiento N/A
On for Kitto. Not on long enough to rate.
PERTH GLORY
Liam Reddy – 8
Nervous, poor clearance early on. Produced a good save getting down low. Comfortable save early in the second-half from Goodwin's shot.
Coming off his lines really well to intercept United's attacking chance. Blinding save from Reddy in the 90th minute, getting down with one hand low to his right-hand side.
Scott Neville – 7
Solid first-half, working extremely hard in defence.
Dino Djulbic – 7
Going about his business, working well with his defensive partners.
Shane Lowry – 7.5
Tracking well, industrial first-half. Defended professionally.
Jason Davisdon – 7
Decent crosses into the box, pressing really well when attacking, giving Perth more width on the left-hand side.
Neil Kilkenny – 8
Nice weighted passes, quality crosses from corners, good range of passes. Fantastic driving runs in the final third. Commander in chief. Brilliant first and second half.
Juande – 7
Switched the play well, good awareness. Holds the midfield well.
Ivan Franjic – 7
Working hard, putting in some dangerous deliveries. Another player giving Perth width but on the right-hand side this time. Pressing well, staying out wide. Subbed 64th minute.
Diego Castro – 7.5
Solid body strength, holds onto the ball well in the final third, always looking for an opening.
Fluffed his chance on the half-hour mark. Redeemed himself with a soft shot on goal which rolled into the net. Always looking lively and dangerous. Subbed 86th minute
Joel Chianese – 7
Had a fantastic effort on goal, just needed a little more from the head. Another quality header connected very well.
Chris Ikonomidis – 8
Sublime ball control, always looking to move the ball forward. Finding space when he gets hold of the ball. Good balance when on the ball.
Held the play up extremely well, looked very comfortable when in possession.
SUBS
Andy Keogh – 6
On for Ivan Franjic. Decent efforts, rolled his man too easily but shot just wide. Picked up a sloppy pass and coolly slots the ball past Izzo.
Fabio Ferreira - N/A
On for Diego Castro. Not on long enough to rate.
