EXCLUSIVE: North Queensland Fury are set to sign Togo international defender Eric Akoto who arrives in Townsville today.
The strapping 29-year-old is currently a free agent after previously playing for Greek second division (Beta Ethniki) club Crete.
Akoto, born in Ghana but a naturalized Togolese, has played for 10 clubs to date in a journeyman career including a number of clubs in Austria and Germany.
The player was also part of the 2006 Togo World Cup squad but did not play in any of the games.
Akoto, capped 32 times, was also in the Togo team bus that was hijacked in Angola earlier this year en-route to the African Cup of nations. The frightening ambush resulted in the death of three people on board.
If Akoto signs for Franz Straka's Fury, he will become the first Togolese international to play in the A-League.
