United’s marquee Paul Agostino scored in his Adelaide appearance as his new club drew 2-2 with the South Australian State Team.
After coming on for the start of the second half, Agostino found the back of the net with his first shot on goal and his second touch for the match.
He beat his marker, to turn in a Shaun Ontong ball from the right. It was an ideal debut for the former Socceroo, who pulled through unscathed after recovering from a broken foot.
Agostino’s goal leveled the scores after the State Team took the lead in the 35th minute through a Damien Mori header, the former Perth Glory and Central Coast player continuing his rich vein of form against United.
Ontong made his United debut in a red shirt, playing firstly at right back, and in the second half on the right side of midfield, doing enough to grab the attention of the United coaching staff.
Goalkeeper Daniel Beltrame also started the match for the first time this season playing the opening 45 minutes before being replaced by loan keeper Scott Higgins.
The State Team was good opposition for The Reds, the players from Adelaide’s Super League going 2-1 up in the 67th minute when a Simon Catanzaro shot from just outside the penalty area, took a slight deflection to beat Higgins.
United midfielder Lucas Pantelis scored the equaliser with a sweetly timed volley from the outside of his left foot in the 77th minute after superb build up work from Travis Dodd, Ontong, Jason Spagnuolo and Angelo Costanzo, with Pantelis curling the ball past State keeper Ben Moore into the far corner.
Dodd missed a late chance to snatch the winner, after beating off four defenders but failed to find the target with just the keeper to beat. The entertaining game ended in a 2-all draw as the friendly raised funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation and Camp Quality.
Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar was satisfied with the performance as he gave a number of his squad valuable game time.
“It was a decent hit out for us tonight, it gave an opportunity for players who haven’t played a great deal to have a run and while it was a bit of a slow start, we made a few changes and there were a lot of pleasing signs,” Vidmar said.
“The state team gave us a really good hit out, they played well and were a very good team.”
