EXCLUSIVE: After Chonburi's stunning 1-1 draw away to group favourites Gamba Osaka, Victory striker Danny Allsopp says Wednesday's ACL clash in steamy Bangkok won't be a walkover.
“I hope to get on the scoresheet but it's going to be tough. I don't think you can go away from home and not respect what they've done,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com.
Victory play Thailand's Chonburi on Wednesday night in Bangkok on match day two of the Asian Champions League.
Allsopp added: “I saw the result this morning. I guess it is a shock result and I don't really know what to expect when we get there. It shows they can play – there won't be any walkovers in this group that's for sure.”
While Victory was getting off the mark at Telstra Dome with a 2-0 win over Chunnam Dragons, and is now leading group G, only a face-saving injury time goal to Gamba's Lucas rescued the J-League power from a humiliating home defeat.
The Thais had earlier taken the lead when Arthit Suntornphit struck from close range after a good run from Brazilian Ney Fabiano on 58 minutes.
Gamba Osaka coach Akira Nishino was a relieved man after the game.
“This was a game we marked down as three points," he said. "But they were a better team than we thought. I knew right away in the first half that this was going to be tough.
"I wasn't thinking about how we can attack but how to defend; I was thinking about the substitutions if and when we scored,” he told the Daily Yomiuri.
As for Wednesday night's encounter in Melbourne, Allsopp conceded it could've been a different result had Victory glovesman Michael Theoklitos not played such a key role. “He made saves, good saves, at crucial times.”
The striker added: “The A-League defences are quite physical in comparison but having said that they were quite sharp.”
Melbourne has undergone heat acclimatisation training over the last month in preparation for the trip to Thailand.
“And we did play in Adelaide when it was about 34 degrees and we felt quite comfortable in that heat. We'll have to go there and do our best and see what happens," added the 29-year-old hitman.
