MELBOURNE Victory striker Danny Allsopp is determined to clear his name after his controversial sending off during Saturday night's A-League Grand Final win over Adelaide United.
To see today's celebrations...
Allsopp received his first red card in four seasons in the A-League for an incident in the 65th minute that was not captured on video, with Adelaide alleging Allsopp headbutted defender Robert Cornthwaite.
But the Victory striker was maintaining his innocence on Monday as Victory's celebrations at becoming the first A-League club to win two Championships showed no signs of abating when the team were honoured in Melbourne's Federation Square.
It was also revealed on Monday by Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick that Allsopp carried a fractured cheekbone into the Grand Final amid claims he would not risked a headbutt with that injury.
"We are going to sort out what happened and I feel I have to clear my name," said Allsopp.
"We will definitely see what avenues are available to us now to see where we go from here but at the moment I am just enjoying the fact we have got the (championship) trophy."
Merrick said the club was determined to do everything in its power to clear Allsopp, who is facing the possibility of missing the start of next season as a result of any suspension incurred due to his grand final sending-off.
"We are not worried about him missing games, we are worried about his reputation and he is bitterly disappointed by it," said the Melbourne coach.
"He is extremely disappointed about his reputation being sullied because he was sent off and no one knows yet why he was sent off.
"We have reviewed the footage and we will certainly be appealing because Danny Allsopp is not that kind of player."
Merrick said Melbourne had a playing culture based on 'respect, discipline and mental toughness' and said Allsopp had shown great character by playing with such a serious injury.
"We actually played the Grand Final with quite a few injuries and one of those injuries was Danny, who played with a fractured cheekbone, while another player who played injured was (midfielder) Billy Celeski, who actually requires an operation for a hip injury."
