EXCLUSIVE: Former Matilda and new host of ABC TV’s live W-League says male A-League fans will enjoy a “prettier” brand of football than the A-League men.
The W-League launches season two this weekend with the grand final rematch between Brisbane Roar and Canberra United. It kicks off a long weekend of "football with style" at Ballymore on Saturday live and exclusive on ABC1 and ABC HD from 3pm AEST.
The remaining three ties are curtain-raisers to the A-League across the long weekend. Taylor, a former Matilda, says the subtleties of the W-League will appeal to the many male A-League fans.
"It's different to the men's but in some cases more exciting. I think it's a prettier game to watch," she told au.fourfourtwo.com.
Also on Saturday, Matilda keeper Melissa Barbieri's Melbourne Victory host Perth Glory with the WA side featuring Matilda star striker Lisa DeVanna and the talented Sam Kerr. Central Coast visit Sydney FC on Monday while the Jets head to Hindmarsh for a clash with the Reds Ladies on the same day.
Taylor will be a sideline commentator while former Matildas great Cheryl Salisbury will be co-commentating alongside the experienced Steve Robilliard.
"It's a little slower and flows and I think if you're a guy, you'd be crazy not to watch," she added.
The Football Superstar series one co-host says she's excited to be combining her two loves of football and media work. "It's been wonderful picking up gigs in-between having a baby. And I would've loved to do the W-League last year but having a bubba made things hard.
"But I'm really excited to get onboard this year in what is creating history for women's football in Australia after having five years of no national league for women.
"And with imports now coming into the game, it shows how strong the league is now becoming."
Taylor played her last game for Australia in 2005 and after 20 caps for Australia and injuries taking a toll, decided to move in a new direction.
The 30-year-old has transitioned smoothly into the media with a regular presenting role on WIN TV news as well as Fishing Australia and the popular football reality franchise Football Superstar, which she co-hosted with Brian McFadden last year.
But the football streak isn't too far away from the former terrier-like defender. "I'm very competitive and I do miss having the odd kick."
