MELBOURNE Victory coach Ange Postecoglou is confident his team has enough firepower at their disposal to overcome Wellington Phoenix on Monday.
Phoenix have made a steady start to the season after their opening-round win at home to Sydney FC – recording two draws, and a loss in one of the most controversial match in Hyundai A-League history.
Belgian recruit Stein Huysegems has flourished since making the move to New Zealand, leading the way for Ricki Herbert's side with three goals in four games, while Manny Muscat's performances in midfield have attracted plenty of praise from around the competition.
However, with Socceroos striker Archie Thompson, Johnny Warren medallist Marcos Flores, Marco Rojas and a fit-again Gui Finkler spearheading Victory's attack, Postecoglou believes a second league win could be on the cards at Etihad Stadium.
"I think it will be pretty tight all over the place," Postecoglou told reporters ahead of the club's final training session on Sunday.
"Wellington traditionally are always a hard team and a pretty consistent team. With them and probably Central Coast, they're the two most settled units over the last four or five years – very minimal changes in players, coaches and all those kinds of things.
"They're a very well organised and compact team so they're hard to break down, the midfield will be pretty willing and physical so we'll have to cope with that.
"But from our point of view, we'd like to think we've got some real attacking threat.
"And if we create as many chances as we did last week then we will be a real chance to win it."
Victory have endured a mediocre start to life under Postecoglou, with just one win in four games but there are signs of improvement.
After edging fierce rivals Adelaide United in Round 3, the dual Hyundai A-League champions were punished for their wastefulness in front of goal as Newcastle Jets extended their unbeaten home record against Victory to four games.
Despite claiming maximum points just once this season and sitting at the foot of the table heading into Monday's clash, Victory are only two wins outside the top two and the former Brisbane Roar tactician is aware of how quickly things can change.
"The key thing for us is progression in our game and if we get better at what we do then we'll win games of football too, but as you can see already it's going to be a tight league," he said.
"No-one's going to run away with it (the premiership). Everyone will be within a couple of games of each other.
"So if you can pick up points it can get you right amongst the leading pack and if you don't, then you'll have another opportunity the week after."
