Postecoglou, who endured a difficult first few months following his arrival at Brisbane Roar before winning back-to-back championships, insisted he expected better from Victory in his domestic debut in charge.

“I was really disappointed we weren't able to perform to the level we wanted,” Postecoglou told Fox Sports.

He added: “We should have been there tonight. There's no excuse for it. There's nothing we've done that shouldn't have prepared us for it.

“This is not a building process. Work has started and we need to be ready.”

Postecoglou said his players had struggled to gain control of the contest.

“It was a bit of an end-to-end open game which is okay if you've got some control but we didn't impose ourselves on the contest for too long,” he said.

Meanwhile, triumphant Heart boss John Aloisi insisted Victory would come good but rejoiced in his debut win as a senior coach as he pulled off an impressive tactical performance.

“We know how Ange likes to play out from the back, even when they're under pressure. They will get better at it because Ange has only had them for a little bit,” Aloisi told Fox Sports.

“They're going to be a top side but we worked on our tactics, we knew what we were up against. We knew how we could hurt them and how they'd hurt us.

“We knew if we pinched the ball in certain areas we'd get good chances and we had quite a few tonight.”

Aloisi reserved special praise for opening goalscorer David Williams, who he challenged in pre-season to re-discover his best form in 2012-13 after a disappointing term last time out.

“I've been happy with David Willaims all pre-season,” he said. “We said to David he needs to get his fitness levels up. That's the main thing with him, we all know his ability. You saw tonight his sharpness was back and he's looking leaner than ever.”
