MELBOURNE Victory coach Ange Postecoglou has revealed that a marquee signing is potentially only a few days away.
Speaking at the unveiling of Mark Milligan as club captain for the 2013-14 Hyundai A-League season, Postecoglou admitted a marquee was hot on his list.
“I’m pretty confident there will be an announcement in the coming days about it,” revealed Postecoglou.
“There’s been a lot of speculation about the marquee position for us.
“We’re really close to a couple of players but until it’s done, let the speculation continue. I love the list of names that keep coming up.”
Victory have been linked to a number of players including William Gallas, Carton Cole, Giorgios Karagounis and Sotirios Kyrgiakos, with Postecoglou revealing a defender is his top priority.
“I think I’ve made it pretty publicly known that we need some more depth in our defensive stocks,” admitted Postecoglou. “That’s the type of person we’re looking for.
“We’ve got some good quality defenders but I think we’re going to get hit with some international commitments this year with both senior, Olyroos and U20’s.
“Three of our back four or back five could be potentially part of that.
“From my perspective I’m really mindful that we need another defender. I think with the marquee spot being available that’s the wisest place for us to use that spot.”
The two-time A-League championship winning coach stressed though that the club was never in any rush to determine who would take up the marquee spot.
“I don’t think we need to rush it,” said Postecoglou. “Our game-plan is pretty much set in stone and 90 percent of the players have been with us for two years now and know it.
“I was never in any hurry to bring him (a marquee) in any earlier.
“Because it’s such a long off-season people probably think we’ve taken too long, but signing someone three or four weeks before the start of the season is absolutely normal anywhere in the world.
“If you ask a foreigner to come here and do a three-month pre-season I reckon that would put them off pretty quickly.
“I’m just trying to convince someone that it’s just a normal three or four week pre-season if we sign them now.”
Postecoglou also wants the defender to be a quality and experienced player to help mentor a youthful Victory squad.
“Hopefully the new player will be a quality player and will be the final piece in our jigsaw,” he added.
“Like Mark said we’ve got a really young group at the moment and we need some experience.”
