The iTunes App Store has seen an increase in recent times of mainly US coaching offerings such as “Coach It Soccer” and “Soccer Coach’s Clipboard”.

In Australia former Socceroo Con Boutsianis launched his own coaching App called “Learn Football” in 2010 and now Smith has followed suit with “Football Practices”.

It provides 30 drills to cover various numbers of players in game-related situations.

Smith’s app describes the rules of the practices, what the players have to achieve in attack and defence and with some suggestions about how long a practice should go for before recovery periods are introduced.

"Once coaches understand the basic concepts behind the practices, they will be able to make their own modifications to suit the situation they are in,” said Smith.

"It's difficult to say that a particular practice is suitable for a certain age group because what happens in a practice is down to the ability of the players.

“I've seen some nine year olds who have been better technically than some 13 year olds, so a coach has to make adaptations to suit the ability of the players.

"I have used some of these practices with U/12s and senior international players, it depends what you expect to happen in the practice that makes the difference, not the practice."

The app is free to download and you get three examples then you can download the other 27 practices for $1.99.

Smith is also planning to launch his own coaching website in the coming months.

"There isn't anything of a technical nature in this app, it is simply about describing how to organise a group of players into a practice that involves playing football," he said.

"I'm really excited about this app because these days everybody expects to be able to download information or whatever you need to solve a problem, so I am trying to provide a service for coaches.

“Select a practice, press play, watch the practice unfold and listen to the instructions, it couldn't be easier.”
