For a man famous for making big calls, this may be his biggest. Speaking to au.foufourtwo.com, Victory’s Asian Cup bound Socceroo striker Archie Thompson believes first-year A-League franchise Wellington Phoenix will make the four this season.
“You know me, I’ve always made bloody big calls!” says Thompson. “Wellington is a new franchise and a lot of players will be wanting to impress and I think they'll be well on their way… they'll do really well. I’d tip them to be a surprise packet for the four.”
Victory must travel to Wellington in their opening round A-League V.3 this August. “To play them in the first round, especially as they have a couple of ex Victory players in Micky Ferrante and Vince Lia and are captained by Ross Aloisi, it's gonna be very, very difficult for us.
“They probably wouldn't want to be playing anyone else and they'll want to be putting one over on us as we are the champions."
“Losing Fred was a loss for us, but with Hernandez, Milicevic, Patafta and Keenan coming in, we’re going to be stronger. Then again Adelaide have recruited exciting talent and Sydney will also be up there.
“I actually think this A-League will be very open...” he added.
