Fabian Orellana scored the game's only goal in the 35th minute to hand Chile their first-ever competitive win over Argentina.

"They were clearly superior all over the pitch. We have no excuses," said Basile.

"They pressured well in midfield and we never found the way to create good passing moves.

"I have never seen Chile playing so well. In the first half they seemed to play with five players more than us."

Atletico Madrid forward Sergio Aguero admitted Argentina need to put the defeat behind them and concentrate on returning to form.

"We have to recover quickly and win the rest of the games, No matter what it costs," he said.

Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa, who spent six years as Argentina coach from 1998 until 2004, was full of praise for his team.

"It was a just triumph," he said. "All the players were in top form.

"The players gave a huge effort and this victory is to their merit.

"Defeating Argentina is a very important feat for Chilean football and was a crucial step in our fight for qualification."
