Brisbane Roar earned 65 points in season 2010/11, the most in A-League history as they eventually won both the premiers plate and championship.

Sydney are currently on 43 points after downing rival Melbourne Victory 2-1 away on Australia Day and has widened the gap between first and second by at least four games.

Arnold referred to Western Sydney Wanderers' record of 57 in their inaugural season in 2012/13 in a 10 team competition. His former club Central Coast Mariners also managed 57 points in 2010/11.

He however made his intent clear of breaking that record.

“History has shown if you win the premiers plate you have a hell of a good chance of winning a Grand Final because you host a home final,” Arnold said.

“That’s what I’m driving the players… I’m driving them to be the best team in A-League history and that is in a 10 team competition.

“The most points returned is 57 and we want to beat that, it doesn’t bother me and we don’t talk about how far we are ahead, we don’t talk about coming first or the premiers plate.

“It’s all about getting more than 57 points.”

Arnold was happy his team was finding ways to win, but remained unconvinced the premiers plate was in the bag.

He was far from happy with the performance against Victory, labelling it as a “dog fight” when they overcame a one-goal deficit to win.

“There’s 30 points to go. I’m not happy with our overall performance tonight,” he said.

“The boys, it’s good to hear them say that they felt they didn’t play anywhere near their best and to still come down here and win 2-1 is a great sign.

“We’ve got a lot to work on, for me it’s about getting better every week. We have 10 games to go in the finals series and we want to be peaking at the right time and that’s just before the finals series.”
