Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold believes the 4-0 scoreline over crosstown rivals Western Sydney Wanderers was not a true reflection of the contest.
The Sky Blues have the wood over Wanderers since January 2014 and at half-time the game was goalless in the first Sydney Derby at ANZ Stadium.
Wanderers boss Tony Popovic felt his team had genuine chances to score and Arnold agreed with his counterpart.
“First half was a lot about the fight for the second ball and Tony (Popovic) is right, towards the back end of the first half, the last five or six minutes they started to get on top a bit,” Arnold said.
“We spoke about it at half-time about the belief of quality in the squad, moving the ball around and being positive with the ball and playing to our patterns and structures and we did that.
“I don’t think it was a 4-0 game, the first half was an arm wrestle, it was a typical derby, it was physical and I thought that we controlled parts of the first half and it was a bit messy at times.”
Arnold also stated his team was not getting carried away after the result and added they were happy with the position they were in for the FFA Cup heading to the capital city to take on Canberra Olympic in the semi-finals in a fortnight.
He was also content with the competition for spots in the squad after electing not to play loanee Bernie Ibini who has recovered from a leg injury from Belgium side Club Brugge.
“It gives me good headaches. I spoke to the boys yesterday about having to disappoint four or five players and leaving them on the bench,” he said.
“If you look what we had on the bench, (Milos) Dimitrijevic - the player of the year two years ago, Seb Ryall, (Alex) Brosque, Matty Simon and Vedran (Janjetovic) who’s our number one goalkeeper.
“When you talk about Bernie Ibini who is going to come back, he’s very close.
“I do believe I have a lot of hungry players in the dressing room, I’ve got quality players who want to play every week and I’ve got a lot of good people in and round me, the staff and we want what’s best for the team.”
