Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold has lauded Andrew Redmayne’s performance against Arsenal and believes he can be the Sky Blues number one goalkeeper this season.
Redmayne’s herculean effort in keeping the Arsenal score to 2-0 caught the attention of Gunners coach Arsene Wenger who said the Sydney FC shot stopper had put in a man-of-the match performance.
The Gosford local made 12 stops during last night’s friendly including saving a penalty. With last season’s A-League goalkeeper of the year Danny Vukovic departing for Belgium, Redmayne showed that he can be Sydney's number one this season.
Arnold agreed with Wenger’s sentiment and believes that Redmayne can fill the void left by Vukovic.
“No problem at all," he said. “He is a number one keeper. I was very happy for him tonight especially against the team he idolises.
“I’ve always had faith in Andrew Redmayne. He’s a copped a bit of harsh criticism over the last couple of years but you’ve got to think two years ago he helped get the Wanderers to Grand Final as their number one keeper.
“To be honest I don’t know much about goalkeeping I just want him to keep the ball out the back of the net. He did that well tonight.”
Despite last night’s performance from Redmayne, Arnold insisted that Sydney FC is still on the lookout for another top line shot stopper.
“The plan in the recruitment is to get another number one goal keeper and to make that competition for places overall,” he said. “My experience over the years is that a goalkeeper can save you ten points and that is important during the season in winning the premiership.
“We were fortunate that we had two number one keepers last year and when Vuka was away with the national team in Perth, Redmayne played and did excellent when we won 3-0.”
Meanwhile Redmayne is confident he can fill the void left by Danny Vukovic and claim that number one spot for himself.
“Yes, why not,” he said. “There is still a long way to go and the main focus is the FFA Cup and then the season proper. I just need to keep working hard, keep the head down, bum up and keep going.
“I’m sure that will hold me in good stead. Working with Arnie and John Crawley and the whole backroom staff it’s just been thoroughly enjoyable.
“It’s a great club do be at. The support from the boys is amazing. There is a great comradery in the team and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my six months at the club so far.
“I’m just enjoying my football and coming into training every day. I’m just happy in my life and it just shows on the field when you are relaxed and positive.”
