CARLING WRAP: Arsenal crushed Newcastle 4-0 while Aston Villa and West Ham both needed extra time to progress in their fourth-round Carling Cup matches.
Newcastle welcomed Arsenal to St James' Park with memories of their victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the last round still fresh in their minds.
But any notions of a similar upset were destroyed when an own goal from Magpies goalkeeper Tim Krul gifted the Gunners the lead on the stroke of half-time.
The goal seemed to energise Arsene Wenger's side after the break, and the lead was soon 2-0 after Theo Walcott struck nine minutes after the interval.
Nicklas Bendtner scored his second goal in two matches since returning from three months on the sidelines with a groin injury, before Walcott added a fourth two minutes from time to send Arsenal into the quarter-finals.
They will be joined in the last eight by Aston Villa, who needed extra time to defeat Championship outfit Burnley 2-1.
It was a dour affair at Villa Park with Emile Heskey finally breaking the deadlock after 86 minutes, only for Clarke Carlisle to equalise for the visitors two minutes later to send the match into extra time.
Villa looked like they were on their way through to the next round when Stewart Downing scored from long range six minutes into extra time, but Marc Albrighton's dismissal with 20 minutes remaining ensured some nervy moments for the Premier League side in the closing stages.
West Ham also progressed via extra time, beating Stoke City 3-1.
Kenwyne Jones put Stoke 1-0 up after just six minutes and they held onto that lead for nearly 80 minutes until Scott Parker gave the Upton Park faithful something to cheer about with an equaliser in the 84th minute.
The Hammers went on to dominate extra time, scoring twice through Manuel da Costa and Victor Obinna to seal a 3-1 victory.
