Hull manager Phil Brown hailed a "fantastic performance" after Richard Garcia struck a late winner to give their first league win.
Australian Garcia settled the contest against Norwich with 13 minutes remaining after latching onto a pinpoint cross from Dean Windass.
Windass had earlier opened the scoring five minutes into the second half only for fellow veteran Dion Dublin to level the scores three minutes after coming on as a 68th-minute replacement for Julien Brellier.
"It's a real relief, not so much from the point of view of a win, but more because of the relentless pressure we put ourselves under," said Brown.
"We played so well in the first half and must have created six decent chances, so to come in at 0-0 was a bit disappointing.
"We should have been out of sight by the time they got their goal. It was a goal out of nothing, and then we came under a bit of pressure from them.
"But it was mainly route one stuff and I was pleased we had the presence of mind to get the ball down and score another.
"It was a fantastic performance, with the only slight criticism being we did not take all our chances."
Brown revealed that Nick Barmby, who was replaced by Michael Bridges in the first half, has suffered knee ligament damage and could be sidelined for "a number of weeks".
However, he praised the impact of Bridges, who was involved in both of Hull's goals.
"It wasn't a good day at the office for Nick. However, Michael made an impact on the game," Brown added.
"He came on earlier than anticipated, but he took his chance and has earned the right to play in our next game."
Norwich boss Peter Grant insisted the match provided "a lot of positives".
Grant added: "I'm very disappointed, and would have been disappointed if we had taken only one point.
"I thought we matched everything they had, but both of their goals came as a result of us giving away possession.
"We threw everything at them in an effort to win the game, and we ended up with four strikers on the pitch.
"There are a lot of positives to take, but it was not a game for the purists.
"I thought we dealt with them comfortably and were always a threat."
Grant added: "Dion (Dublin) is a very important part of the group. He adds something different into the mix, which is important because I don't want us to be one-dimensional.
"He's a very good finisher and is capable of a goal like that."
Dublin equalised with a superb volley from 20 yards after Chris Brown's knock-down.
His leveller came after Windass had collected Bridges' cutback to curl home a right-footed shot from the edge of the area to give Hull the lead for the first time.
Gary Doherty headed Simon Lappin's cross just over as Norwich searched for a winner, but Hull snatched the points on the break.
Windass clipped the ball to the far post from the left, and Garcia - who had earlier come close on two occasions - beat David Marshall with a low strike.
