O’Neill joined Fleetwood in pre-season on a season-long loan from English Premier League side Burnley FC.

So far the central midfielder has made three appearances for the Trawlermen in the league, all victories for the Lancashire outfit.

They currently sit in third place in League One, only behind league-leaders Wigan on goal difference.

“The loan is going really well so far even though it's only been a few weeks,” O’Neill told FourFourTwo.

“Everyone at the club have been really welcoming, including the fans. It's a really tightknit club - like Burnley. They are very ambitious and want to go far too which I am loving being a part of.

"I've also been really lucky so far wherever I have played to have such supportive and passionate fans. They're called the Cod Army and love their singing which is great. I'm happy with the League start.

"I wasn't happy that we got knocked out of the Carabao Cup in extra time but we've got a couple of other Cups to play in like the FA Cup. It will be a very busy year I think.”

O’Neill made his debut for Fleetwood in round one off the bench against Rotherham United.

“It was great to go on,” he said.

“We were already 2-0 up so Rotherham started chasing the game with long balls so I didn't touch it many times. A good win first up against a very difficult team - you could see how good they're going to be in their next game.”

The Trawlermen were promoted into League One in 2014, their sixth promotion in 10 years.

Last season the club finished fourth but were knocked out of the playoffs by Bradford City.

“They did really well last year getting to the playoff semis,” O’Neill said.

“We want to go further and better than last year. Anything is possible - you never know.”

In July Uwe Rosler replaced Steven Pressley as manager of Fleetwood.

O’Neill describes the former Leeds United and Wigan boss Rosler as “fantastic”

“He's really supportive and gives lots of feedback,” the 19-year old said.

“He's had an incredible career as a player too. Played at a really high level so I'm sure I will be learning heaps from him. From what I have seen he likes to keep the ball which is great for me because I like to control a game if I can.”
