In the Scottish Premier League, Tom Rogic marked his Celtic debut with an assist as the Bhoys beat second placed Inverness 3-1. After Celtic fell behind on 10 minutes, Rogic provided the assist for the equaliser 10 minutes later with a mazy dribble to the right by-line before cutting the ball back on his non-preferred right boot to Kris Commons who smashed the ball home from just inside the box. Rogic, who played the full 90 minutes, went close to scoring just minutes later but his curling strike from the edge of the area just went over the crossbar.

In the English Premier League, Mark Schwarzer kept a clean-sheet as Fulham played out a dull 0-0 draw with Norwich City. Schwarzer did make a fine stop to deny new Canaries signing Luciano Becchio in the opening minutes but was barely tested from that moment onwards.

Adam Federici played a full game in goal as Reading lost 2-1 at Stoke City. Federici did well to tip Peter Crouch’s effort over the bar in the first half before he was beaten by Robert Huth’s thumping header and Cameron Jerome’s powerful strike in the second half.

Elsewhere, Brett Holman was an unused substitute as Aston Villa won their first league game since mid-December, beating West Ham United 2-1. Chris Herd was absent with a foot injury as Villa jumped out of the relegation zone.

In the Championship, Rhys Williams played his 100th game for Middlesbrough, but the occasion was soured as Boro suffered their fifth straight defeat, losing 3-2 at home to lowly Barnsley. Scott McDonald missed the clash with a back injury.

Shane Lowry played a full game at left-back as Millwall’s poor form continued, losing 2-1 to Blackpool. Lowry nearly earned a point for his side in second half stoppage time but his powerful strike cannoned back of the crossbar.

Seb Usai and Patrick Kisnorbo were unused substitutes for their respective sides as Blackburn beat Ipswich Town 1-0.

Elsewhere, Neil Kilkenny was absent with an ankle injury as Bristol City beat Nottingham Forest 2-0, a result which leaves Bristol just three points from safety, while Mile Jedinak missed Crystal Palace’s 2-2 draw against Watford with an eye injury.

In League One, Bailey Wright saw red as Preston North End lost 1-0 to Colchester United. Wright picked up two yellow cards in five minutes deep in the second half, the second of the cards coming following an altercation with Jabo Ibehre.

Bradden Inman played a full game in midfield as Crewe Alexandra drew 1-1 with Notts County. Fresh from his midweek double, Inman went close to scoring again, striking the post with a curling effort from range in the first half.

James Wesolowski played the full 90 minutes as Oldham Athletic won their first game under caretaker boss Tony Philliskirk with a 3-1 win over MK Dons. Dean Bouzanis also played 90 minutes in the clash, while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute.

In League Two, Curtis Good returned from illness, starting and playing 73 minutes in Bradford City’s 1-0 loss to Gillingham. James Meredith was absent from the Bradford match-day squad.

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full game for Rochdale in their 3-1 loss to Northampton, while Aaron Downes played 90 minutes as Torquay United lost 1-0 to Fleetwood Town. Despite the loss Downes had a fine game in defence and went close to scoring a last gasp equaliser, only for his header to hit the cross-bar from Kevin Nicholson’s free-kick.

Jamie Young played a full game in goal as Aldershot Town dropped into the relegation zone with a 2-1 loss to Plymouth Argyle. Young was nearly the unlikely hero, twice getting his head to the ball in the dying seconds as he came up for the final corner of the game.

In Scotland, Alex Baird was an unused substitute as Dundee FC remained bottom with a 2-0 loss to Ross County, while Dylan McGowan was absent from the Hearts match-day squad as they went down 3-1 to Dundee United.

In the Scottish Second Division, Marc Warren was sent off for two bookable offences as Airdrie United suffered a 4-0 thumping from league leaders Greenock Morton.

In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse played 83 minutes as Fortuna Dusseldorf lost 1-0 to Freiburg. After a quiet first half, Kruse got involved regularly in the second half, setting up Oliver Fink who missed the target before testing Freiburg ‘keeper Oliver Baumann from range. Freiburg struck the winner just minutes after Kruse left the pitch, with Pavel Krmas finding the back of the net.

Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute following the return to health of regular number one Roman Weidenfeller as Borussia Dortmund suffered a shock 4-1 home loss to Hamburg.

Elsewhere, Nikita Rukavytsya was absent from the match-day squad as FSV Mainz drew 1-1 with Augsburg.

In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie was an 81st minute substitute as FSV Frankfurt beat Erzgebirge Aue 2-0.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Michael Zullo started and played 62 minutes as FC Utrecht slipped to a disappointing 3-0 home loss to NEC Nijmegen. Zullo, who was filling the central attacking midfield role often occupied by the injured Tommy Oar was largely quiet during his shift. Oar was out with a hamstring injury, while Adam Sarota was absent with a knee injury.

Jason Davidson was an unused substitute as Heracles returned to the winners list with a 4-1 thumping of Willem II. Elsewhere, Travis Cooper was absent from the VVV Venlo side that drew 2-2 with SC Heerenveen.

In Turkey, Kerem Bulut was an unused substitute as bottom placed Akhisar Belediyespor caused an upset, beating Istanbul 2-0. Elsewhere, Aziz Behich was absent from the Bursapor match-day squad as they beat Kardemir Karabukspor 3-0.

In the Italian Serie A, James Troisi was absent from the match-day squad as Atalanta played out a 0-0 draw with Catania.

In the Serie B, Carl Valeri was again absent from the match-day squad as Sassuolo remained top with a 3-1 win over FC Pro Vercelli.

In the Greek Super League, Giannis Simosis was absent from the AO Kerkyra side that lost 1-0 to AEK Athens.

In Portugal, Caleb Patterson-Sewell was an unused substitute as Vitoria Setubal beat Gil Vicente 1-0.

In the Belgian Second Division, Kofi Danning was absent from the match-day squad as CS Vise drew 1-1 with Roeselare.

In the Qatar Stars League, Sasa Ognenovski played the full 90 minutes as Umm Salal drew 1-1 with Kharaitiyat, while Matt Spiranovic was absent from the Al Arabi side that drew 1-1 with Qatar SC.

In the UAE Preisdent Cup, Alex Brosque found the back of the net in Al Ain’s 2-1 win over Nick Carle’s Baniyas. Brosque struck the game’s opener in the first half with a fine diving header at the back post from Jires Kembo-Ekoko’s cross.  

In Iran, Milan Susak returned from injury, playing 90 minutes Sepahan beat Sanat Naft 3-0.
