In the English Premier League, Mark Schwarzer played a starring role as Fulham pulled off a shock, beating Champions League chasing Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at White Hart Lane. Schwarzer, who was merely a spectator in the first half, made two crucial second half saves to preserve the lead for Fulham, first to deny Jermaine Defoe with a fine reaction stop before denying the English striker again in stoppage time with a superb save after Defoe latched onto Gareth Bale’s cross.

Brad Jones played a full game in goal as Liverpool suffered a shock 3-1 loss to lowly Southampton. Despite the scoreline, Jones had a fine game between the sticks, making numerous saves throughout the contest as Liverpool’s defence was opened up time and time again by the rampant Saints.

Brett Holman was an unused substitute as Aston Villa’s survival hopes gained a massive boost with a 3-2 win over fellow relegation battlers Queens Park Rangers. Chris Herd missed the clash through injury.

Elsewhere, Adam Federici was absent with an ankle injury as Reading remained bottom with a 1-0 loss to Manchester United.

In the English Championship, Shane Lowry found the back of the net with an absolute screamer in Millwall’s 2-0 win over London rivals Charlton Athletic. Lowry, who dropped back into the centre of defence following an early injury to Karleigh Osborne, sealed the points in the second half with a stunning 25-metre free-kick into the top corner, leaving Charlton ‘keeper David Button with no chance.

Scott McDonald played a full game as Middlesbrough’s season continued to unravel with a 1-0 loss to Birmingham City. McDonald found the back of the net in the first half but was adjudged to have been offside. Rhys Williams was an unused substitute in the clash.

Mile Jedinak played a full game as Crystal Palace’s automatic promotion hopes suffered a blow following a 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Elsewhere, Neil Kilkenny was an 85th minute substitute as Bristol City dropped to the bottom of the table following a 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton, while Patrick Kisnorbo was an unused substitute as Ipswich Town beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0.

In League One, Dean Bouzanis played a full game in goal as Oldham Athletic failed to ease their relegation fears with a 1-0 home loss to Bournemouth. James Wesolowski also played a full game while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute. Oldham are now in 21st position, two points from safety.

Bailey Wright was absent with an ankle injury as Preston North End lost 1-0 to Brentford, while Bradden Inman was out with injury as Crewe Alexandra drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury.

In League Two, Jamie Young played a full game as Aldershot Town lost 1-0 to fellow strugglers AFC Wimbledon, while Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full game as Rochdale lost 2-1 to Bristol Rovers.

Dylan McGowan played a full game at right-back as Hearts suffered cup heartbreak, losing 3-2 to St Mirren in the final of the League Cup.

In the Scottish Second Division, Marc Warren played a full game as Airdrie United lost 3-2 to Cowdenbeath.

In Ireland, striker Mark Griffin found the back of the net in Derry City’s 6-0 thumping of UCD Dublin. Griffin scored the game’s final goal deep in the second half.

In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse provided an assist in Fortuna Dusseldorf’s 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg. Kruse, who was substituted in the dying minutes of the second half, set up Mathis Golly on 37 minutes with a speedy run down the left to the by-line before clipping a goal to the six yard box which was volleyed home by the Norwegian. The result sees Dusseldorf move five points clear of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund thumped SC Freiburg 5-1, while Nikita Rukavytsya was absent with injury as FSV Mainz played out a 0-0 draw with lowly Hoffenheim.

In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie started and played 83 minutes as FSV Frankfurt’s promotion hopes suffered a blow following a 3-0 loss to Paderborn. Despite the result, Frankfurt created plenty of opportunities with Leckie seeing a volleyed effort cleared off the line in the first half.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Tommy Oar was substituted with an injury in FC Utrecht’s 2-1 loss to Feyenoord. Already missing Adam Sarota and Michael Zullo through injury, Oar appears to be joining them on the sidelines for at least a few days after suffering a heavy knock to his knee, leaving him in doubt for the crucial World Cup Qualifier against Oman.

Jason Davidson was absent from the match-day squad as Heracles beat VVV Venlo 2-0. Travis Cooper wasn’t in the Venlo match-day squad.
