In the English Premier League, Mark Schwarzer played a full game in goal as Fulham lost 1-0 at Everton. Despite the result, Schwarzer had a decent game in goal with a string of fine saves, the best coming in the second half to deny Kevin Mirallas’ powerful drive.

Elsewhere, Brad Jones was an unused substitute as Liverpool hammered struggling Newcastle 6-0, while Adam Federici was absent with injury as Reading were officially relegated following a dour 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers, who were also relegated following the clash.

In the English Championship, Mile Jedinak returned from suspension, playing 90 minutes in midfield as Crystal Palace failed to win for the eighth game in the row, drawing 1-1 with lowly Blackburn Rovers. Jedinak did go close to scoring in the second half with his header grazing the crossbar. Seb Usai was an unused substitute for Blackburn.

Scott McDonald scored a late equaliser as Middlesbrough came from 2-0 down to rescue a point in a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic. McDonald, who started the game on the bench, was introduced on 54 minutes and made an immediate impact, drawing a decent save from Charlton ‘keeper Ben Hamer before going one better four minutes from time, capitalising on some indecision from Hamer at a corner to head home his 13th league goal for the season at the back post.

Rhys Williams played a full game in the clash and scored an unfortunate own goal after his block from Yann Kermorgant’s cross found the back of the net.

Elsewhere, Neil Kilkenny played a full game in midfield as relegated Bristol City lost 3-1 to Huddersfield, while Patrick Kisnorbo was an unused substitute as Ipswich Town beat Birmingham City 3-1.

Shane Lowry missed Millwall’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest through suspension, a result that leaves the Lions just one point clear of the relegation zone.

In League One, Dean Bouzanis played a full game in goal as Oldham Athletic drew 1-1 with Leyton Orient. Alex Cisak was an unused substitute, while James Wesolowski was missing with a knee injury. Oldham ended the season in 19th position, three points clear of the relegation zone.

Massimo Luongo played a full game in midfield as Swindon Town lost 3-1 to relegated Scunthorpe. Luongo had a busy first half, first setting up Adam Rooney with a fine through ball, only to see his effort saved by ‘keeper Sam Slocombe. Luongo then found Darren Ward with a pin-point free-kick but Ward’s header crashed against the crossbar. Despite the disappointing result, Swindon will take part in the promotion play-offs.

Bailey Wright started but was substituted at half time with concussion as Preston North End played out a 0-0 draw with Sheffield United. The Lilywhites ended the season in 14th.

Elsewhere, Bradden Inman was a 64th minute substitute as Crewe Alexandra beat Walsall 2-0. Inman provided the assist for the game clincher on 86 minutes, feeding Arsenal loanee Chuks Aneke who curled a stunning effort into the back of the net.

In League Two, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full game in defence as Rochdale beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0.

Elsewhere, Jamie Young played a full game in goal as Aldershot Town were relegated following a 2-0 loss to Rotherham. Young had a moment to forget on 62 minutes, dropping a cross allowing Johnny Mullins to arrive and slam home the goal.

There was better luck for Aaron Downes, as his side Torquay United stayed in the division following a 3-3 draw with Bristol Rovers. The Australian defender played a full game in the clash.

Finally, James Meredith was an unused substitute as Bradford City played out a 0-0 draw with Cheltenham.

In the Scottish Premier League, Tom Rogic started and played 72 minutes for Celtic in their disappointing 3-1 loss to Motherwell. Rogic had some classy touches in his shift, none more so than his raking long-range ball in the opening minute which found Charlie Watt but the striker could only fire over. Rogic should some impressive signs in a deep playmaker role, linking well with striker Georgios Samaras on multiple occasions in the first half but the former Mariners was very quiet in the second half with Motherwell controlling the game.  

Dylan McGowan played a full game in the centre of defence as Hearts loss 1-0 to cellar-dwellers Dundee FC. Alex Baird was an unused substitute for Dundee.

In the Scottish Second Division, Marc Warren started and played 81 minutes as Airdrie United lost 2-0 to Livingston FC.

In Ireland, Mark Griffin was an unused substitute as Derry City drew 1-1 with St Patrick’s.

In the German Bundesliga, Mitch Langerak earned a rare start, playing a full game in goal as Borussia Dortmund beat Robbie Kruse’s Fortuna Dusseldorf 2-1. Langerak, who had just been beaten by Adam Bodzek, made a stunning save the preserve the lead for Dortmund in second half stoppage time, showing remarkable reactions to claw out Martin Latka’s header. Kruse also played a full game in the clash but had little impact. The result leaves Fortuna well and truly entrenched in the relegation dogfight with three games to play.

Elsewhere, Nikita Rukavytsya was absent from the match-day squad as FSV Mainz played out a 0-0 draw with rivals Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie started and played 73 minutes as FSV Frankfurt stayed in the hunt for promotion with a 3-1 win over Dynamo Dresden. Leckie had some decent moments throughout the contest, picking out John Verhoek with a corner, only for the striker to see his effort blocked on the line. Leckie then went close to scoring himself, drilling a low shot just wide of the far post.

In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini was missing through suspension as Borussia Dortmund II lost 2-1 to SV Wehen.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Michael Zullo was a 73rd minute substitute as FC Utrecht beat PEC Zwolle 2-1. Tommy Oar & Adam Sarota missed the clash through injury.

Elsewhere, Travis Cooper was absent from the VVV Venlo side as they drew 1-1 with ADO Den Haag, while Jason Davidson missed Heracles 6-0 hammering from Feyenoord.

In the Dutch Second Division, Andrew Marveggio was an 89th minute substitute as SC Telstar lost 2-0 to De Graafschap.

In Austria, James Holland played a full game in midfield as Austria Wien moved a step closer to the title with a 2-0 win over Admira.

In Denmark, Brent McGrath was an 84th minute substitute as Brondby beat Odense 2-1.

In the Italian Serie A, James Troisi was an unused substitute as Atalanta drew 1-1 with Bologna.

In the Serie B, Carl Valeri remained out with injury as Sassuolo lost 2-1 to Modena, leaving them just four points clear at the top of the table with 3 games to play.

In Turkey, Kerem Bulut was an 82nd minute substitute as Akhisar Belediyespor moved a step closer to top flight survival with a hard fought 1-1 draw with Bursapor. Aziz Behich was absent from the Bursapor match-day squad.

In Russia, Luke Wilkshire played a full game at right-back as Dinamo Moscow beat Mordovia Saransk 3-1. Dinamo are now unbeaten in 12 games and sit in the Europa League spots.

In Serbia, midfielder Matthew Byrne found the back of the net for Teleoptik Zemun in their 1-1 draw with KF Vozdovac. Byrne is on loan at the second division club from Donji Srem.

In the American MLS, Tim Cahill scored a brace as the New York Red Bulls beat Toronto FC 2-1. Cahill, who earlier went close with a header, opened his account on 39 minutes, capitalising on some good work down the left from Thierry Henry to sweep home a goal on his left boot from the penalty spot. Cahill then scored the winner in the 89th minute with a superbly timed run to head home Henry’s cross at the back post.

In the Chinese Super League, Ryan McGowan found the back of the net as Shandong Luneng played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Hangzhou Greentown. With his side trailing 2-0 in the first half, the former Hearts defender pulled out a strike from the top shelf, rifling home a volley directly from a corner which nestled into the top corner.

Erik Paartalu scored a brace in Tianjin Teda’s 3-2 win over Wuhan Zall. The former Brisbane Roar midfielder equalised for his side in first half stoppage time, heading home following a scramble in the box after the Wuhan defence failed to clear a set-piece before Paartalu made it 3-1 on the hour mark, rising highest from a corner to nod home.

Elsewhere, Matt McKay started and played 61 minutes as Changchun Yatai played out a 0-0 draw with Jiangsu Sainty, while Rostyn Griffiths started but was taken off with an injury after 25 minutes in Guangzhou R&F’s 2-0 loss to Guangzhou Evergrande.

In Japan, Josh Kennedy played a full game in attack but was largely quiet as Nagoya Grampus drew 1-1 with Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

In Korea, Adrian Madaschi played a full game in defence as Jeju United drew 1-1 with Daegu FC.

Robbie Cornthwaite was an unused substitute as Chunnam Dragons played out a 0-0 draw with Seongnam. Cornthwaite appears to have lost his regular starting berth in the Chunnam side, starting just twice in their 9 leagues games to date.

Alex Wilkinson was absent from the match-day squad as Jeonbuk Motors drew 1-1 with Pohang Steelers, while Nathan Burns was again absent as Incheon United drew 2-2 with Ulsan Hyundai.
