OS AUSSIES: Oliver Bozanic stole the headlines with a brace in Switzerland on a weekend with limited action as several of the Asian leagues take a break for the EAFF East Asian Cup.
In Switzerland, Oliver Bozanic scored a brace as FC Luzern lost 4-2 to FC Aarau. Bozanic opened the scoring on 8 minutes, nodding home Dimitri Rangelov’s pinpoint cross before seeing his side concede four goals in 25 minutes. Bozanic pulled one back for his side on 39 minutes with another header, this time from Michel Renggli’s cross, but was then substituted midway through the second half.
In the Russian Premier League, Luke Wilkshire started and played 90 minutes as Dinamo Moscow scored a stoppage time penalty to beat Anzhi Makhachkala 2-1.
In Austria, James Holland started and played 63 minutes in midfield as Austria Wien began their league campaign with a 2-0 win over Admira. Holland was substituted to give his side more attacking options and the move proved a masterstroke with Wien scoring twice in the final 15 minutes to secure the victory.
In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie was absent through injury as FSV Frankfurt opened their season with a 1-0 loss to Karlsruher SC. Leckie is currently nursing a fractured thumb.
In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini was absent from the match-day squad as Borussia Dortmund II began their league campaign with a 1-0 win over VfB Stuttgart.
In the Europa League Qualifiers, Tommy Oar played a full game as FC Utrecht suffered a shock 2-1 loss away to Luxembourgian side FC Differdange 03 in the first leg. Michael Zullo was an unused substitute in the clash while Adam Sarota remained out with a knee injury. The second leg will be played on Friday.
Elsewhere, Mark Griffin was an 86th minute substitute as Derry City lost 4-2 to Turkish side Trabzonspor in the first leg in Turkey, while Steven Lustica was absent from the match-day squad as Hajduk Split beat Macedonian side FK Turnovo 2-1.
In the American MLS, Tim Cahill played 90 minutes in midfield as the New York Red Bulls played out a 0-0 draw with Toronto FC.
In South Korea, Nathan Burns and Adrian Madaschi were both absent from their respective sides as Incheon United drew 1-1 with Jeju United.
In the Chinese Second Division, former Adelaide United & Perth Glory midfielder Adam Hughes found the back of the net for Harbin Yiteng in their 3-2 win over Chengdu Blades. Hughes scored the game’s opener on 17 minutes, nodding home from close range after Bu Xin’s shot cannoned back off the post.
