IT WAS a productive weekend for our Aussies Abroad with several former A-League stars shining for their respective sides.
Mathew Ryan started his Club Brugge career with a clean-sheet and Oliver Bozanic’s hot form in-front of goal continued, while Mathew Leckie scored on return from injury in Germany and Tim Cahill also found the back of the net in the US.
In the Belgian Pro League, Mathew Ryan kept a clean-sheet on debut for Club Brugge in their 2-0 win over Sporting Charleroi. Ryan was barely called upon as Brugge dominated the contest despite midfielder Timmy Simons being sent off in the 21st minute.
In the MLS, Tim Cahill scored his sixth goal of the season as the New York Red Bulls beat Real Salt Lake 4-3. Cahill opened the scoring on 11 minutes, somehow being left unmarked at the back post to nod home Thierry Henry’s free kick.
In the German Super Cup, Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern Munich 4-2.
In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie scored for FSV Frankfurt in their 2-1 loss to 1860 Munich. Leckie, making his first appearance for the season after recovering from a fractured thumb, opened the scoring on 53 minutes, with his low drive from outside the box deflecting off Kai Bulow and looping over the hapless Gabor Kiraly in goal.
Elsewhere, Ben Halloran was absent from the match-day squad as Fortuna Dusseldorf drew 1-1 with FC Koln.
In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini was absent from the match-day squad as Borussia Dortmund II lost 1-0 to VfL Osnabruck.
In Switzerland, Oliver Bozanic scored another brace as FC Luzern won their first game of the season, beating FC Zurich 3-2. Bozanic opened the scoring on 18 minutes with a well timed run into the penalty box to receive Jahmir Hyka’s cross and flicking a clever volley past David da Costa.
The former Mariners midfielder doubled his tally on 73 minutes, getting on the end of a through ball and rounding da Costa before finishing well from a tight angle. Bozanic has now scored four goals in just two games and is the unlikely co-leader in the race for the Golden Boot with Izet Hajrovic of Grasshopper.
In the Russian Premier League, Luke Wilkshire played a full game as Dinamo Moscow were thumped 4-1 by rivals Spartak Moscow. Wilkshire was caught out for Spartak’s second goal on 12 minutes, misjudging Aiden McGeady's lofted pass which allowed Pavel Yakovlev to score.
In the Europa League Qualifiers, Tommy Oar played 90 minutes as FC Utrecht were eliminated from the competition following a shock 3-3 draw with Luxembourgian side FC Differdange, with Differdange winning the tie 5-4 on aggregate.
Oar had a bright start to the contest but faded as the game went on, with Utrecht throwing away a 3-1 lead in the final 30 minutes. Michael Zullo was an unused substitute in the clash, while Adam Sarota was absent with a knee injury.
Elsewhere, Mark Griffin was an unused substitute as Derry City were eliminated following a 3-0 loss to Trabzonspor, while Steven Lustica was absent from the match-day squad as Hajduk Split booked their spot in the next round with a 3-2 aggregate win over FK Turnovo.
In the Dutch Super Cup, Eli Babalj was absent from the match-day squad as AZ Alkmaar lost 3-2 to Ajax in extra time.
In Austria, James Holland started and played 54 minutes as Austria Wien suffered a 5-1 thumping from Red Bull Salzburg.
In the Chinese Second Division, Adam Hughes played 90 minutes as Harbin Yiteng drew 1-1 with Shenzhen Ruby, while Ryan Griffiths was in action for Beijing Baxy in their 2-1 loss to Chongqing FC.
