WITH the squad announcement for the friendly against Brazil due to take place later this week, several young guns put their hands up for selection with good performances across the globe.
Tommy Oar shone in Holland, Mathew Leckie’s superb season continued, while Tom Rogic and Robbie Kruse made their first appearances for the season.
In the Dutch Eredivisie, Tommy Oar played a key role with an assist in FC Utrecht’s 2-0 win over AZ Alkmaar. Oar was involved in the opener on 54 minutes, spreading the ball wide to Dave Bulthuis whose pinpoint low cross was converted by Steve de Ridder. Oar then provided the assist for De Ridder’s second, pouncing on a poor pass before embarked on a mazy run, drawing three defenders before slipping the ball through for De Ridder who finished with aplomb from the edge of the box. Michael Zullo and Adam Sarota were both absent from the Utrecht match-day squad, while Eli Babalj was absent from the AZ side.
Jason Davidson played a full game in defence as Heracles drew 1-1 with PSV Eindhoven. Davidson, who was solid in defence, could have done better to prevent Park Ji Sung’s equaliser four minutes from time with former Manchester United star turning Davidson in the box and finishing into the bottom corner.
In the English Premier League, Mile Jedinak played a full game in midfield as Crystal Palace lost 2-1 to Stoke City. Jedinak went close to scoring in the first half but his header from a free-kick was straight at ‘keeper Asmir Begovic.
Chris Herd returned from injury but had to settle for a place on the bench as Aston Villa lost 1-0 to Liverpool. Brad Jones was an unused substitute for Liverpool.
In the Championship, Scott McDonald made his first start for Millwall, playing a full game as the Lions moved off the bottom of the table with a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. McDonald made an instant impact in the clash, playing a role in the opener on four minutes, feeding Lee Martin whose cross cannoned off Wednesday defender Kamal Zayette and into his own net. McDonald looked to have won his side a penalty in the second half after appearing to be fouled but Millwall’s appeal were turned down. Shane Lowry played a full game for Millwall and was perhaps lucky not to give away a penalty of his own in the second half after a challenge on Reda Johnson.
Rhys Williams played a full game in defence as Middlesbrough drew 2-2 with Wigan Athletic.
Alex Cisak made his debut for Burnley, coming on in the 57th minute as the Clarets lost 2-0 to Brighton. Cisak came on after Tom Heaton was sent off for two bookable offences.
Elsewhere, Adam Federici was an unused substitute as Reading lost 1-0 to Blackpool.
In League One, Bradden Inman made his first appearance as an official Crewe player, coming on in the 69th minute in their 2-0 loss to Leyton Orient. Inman joined Crewe on a permanent deal last week from Newcastle United after an impressive loan stint last season.
Bailey Wright found the back of the net with a wonder-goal for Preston North End in their thrilling 4-4 draw with Coventry City. Wright struck on 64 minutes with a stunning volley on the outside of his boot leaving Coventry ‘keeper Joe Murphy with no chance. Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was absent from the Preston match-day squad.
James Meredith played a full game at left back as Bradford City continued their good start to the season with a 2-0 win over Sheffield United.
James Wesolowski played a full game in midfield as Oldham Athletic beat Port Vale 3-1, while Massimo Luongo played 90 minutes as Swindon Town drew 2-2 with Gillingham.
Elsewhere, Neil Kilkenny was an unused substitute as Bristol City drew 2-2 with MK Dons.
In League Two, Ryan Williams made his debut for Oxford United, coming on as a 52nd minute substitute in their 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers.
Elsewhere, Aaron Downes played a full game in defence and put in a strong performance as Torquay United beat Northampton Town 2-1.
In the Scottish Premier League, Tom Rogic started his first game of the season, playing 80 minutes in Celtic’s 2-2 draw with Inverness. Rogic had some decent touches during the second half but overall failed to impact the game.
Dylan McGowan played a full game in defence as Hearts continued their good form with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen. Despite playing a youthful side after a having a transfer embargo placed on them, Hearts are defying the odds with a strong start to the season and with their 15 point penalty reduced to eight after four games.
Elsewhere, Jackson Irvine played a full game in midfield as Kilmarnock lost 2-1 to Hibernian.
In Ireland, Mark Griffin was a 29th minute substitute as Derry City played out a 0-0 draw with Bluebell United.
In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse made his debut for Bayer Leverkusen, coming on in the 88th minute in their 4-2 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.
Elsewhere, Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 1-0, while Nikita Rukavytsya was absent from the FSV Mainz side that beat Wolfsburg 2-0.
In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie continued his superb start to the season, scoring in FSV Frankfurt’s 1-1 draw with Union Berlin. Leckie opened the scoring on 41 minutes, stooping low to nod home Michael Gorlitz’s corner. Leckie now has four goals and two assists in his five appearances in all competitions this season.
Elsewhere, Ben Halloran was absent from the match-day squad as Fortuna Dusseldorf beat VfL Bochum 1-0.
In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini was a 72nd minute substitute as Borussia Dortmund II lost 2-1 to Jahn Regensburg.
In the Italian Serie A, Carl Valeri was absent with injury as Sassuolo began life in the top division with a 2-0 loss to Torino, while James Troisi was absent from the match-day squad as Atalanta lost 2-1 to Cagliari.
In the Dutch Second Division, Travis Cooper scored his first league goal for VVV Venlo in their 3-2 win over Helmond Sport. Cooper, who had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes, put his side 3-1 up on 85 minutes with a neat finish from close range following a clever flick from a team-mate.
Elsewhere, Andrew Marveggio started and played 66 minutes as SC Telstar beat FC Volendam 2-1.
In Switzerland, Oliver Bozanic played a full game in midfield as FC Luzern earned a 1-1 draw with defending champions FC Basel. Bozanic set up Luzern’s equaliser in second half stoppage time with the former Mariner drawing a fine reflex save with a deft touch on the volley from a corner, with Dimitar Rangelov converting the rebound.
In the Belgian Pro League, Mat Ryan played a full game as Club Brugge drew 1-1 with KAA Gent.
In Austria, James Holland played a full game in midfield as Austria Wien thumped Wolfsberger 4-1.
In Russia, Luke Wilkshire played a full game at right-back at Dinamo Moscow drew 1-1 with Zenit St Petersburg. Wilkshire, starting his first game since late July, was involved in the opener on 64 minutes with his low cross from the by-line finding Alan Kasaev who in-turn found Balazs Dzsudzsak with the Hungarian’s shot deflecting off a defender and into the back of the net.
In Croatia, Steven Lustica was an unused substitute as Hajduk Split lost 1-0 to Istra 1961.
In Turkey, Kerem Bulut was absent from the match-day as Akhisar Belediyespor lost 3-0 to Genclerbirligi.
In the Greek Super League, Dean Bouzanis was an unused substitute Aris FC lost 2-0 to AEL Kalloni.
In Japan, Lucas Neill made his debut for Omiya Ardija, coming on in the 77th minute as Omiya lost 3-2 to Kashiwa Reysol. Neill went close to equalising in stoppage time but his effort on goal rattled the crossbar.
Elsewhere, Josh Kennedy played a full game as Nagoya Grampus drew 1-1 with Cerezo Osaka.
In the K-League Classic, Alex Wilkinson scored for Jeonbuk Motors in their 3-0 win over Jeju United. Wilkinson, who played a full game, scored his side’s second goal on 32 minutes, stooping low to flick on a header from a free-kick which beat the ‘keeper at his far post. Adrian Madaschi was absent from the Jeju match-day squad.
Elsewhere, Robbie Cornthwaite was a 90th minute substitute as Chunnam Dragons lost 3-2 to Pohang Steelers, while Luke Devere was an unused substitute as Gyeongnam drew 0-0 with FC Seoul.
In the Chinese Super League, Ryan McGowan played a full game in defence as Shandong Luneng beat Hangzhou Greentown. Shandong remain in second, 14 points behind leaders Guangzhou R&F.
Michael Marrone started and played 79 minutes as Shanghai Shenxin beat Guizhou Renhe 2-1. Marrone had a golden chance to score in the 78th minute but hit his shot straight at the keeper from just inside the box. Jonas Salley missed the clash through suspension.
Erik Paartalu started and played 74 minutes as Tianjin Teda lost 1-0 to bottom placed Wuhan Zall to leave them just one point clear of the relegation zone.
Eddy Bosnar played a full game in defence as Guangzhou R&F lost 1-0 to rivals Guangzhou Evergrande. Rostyn Griffiths was an 88th minute substitute in the clash.
Elsewhere, Joel Griffiths was absent from the match-day squad as Qingdao Jonoon lost 1-0 to Liaoning Whowin, while Daniel McBreen played a full game as Shanghai SIPG lost 1-0 to Shanghai Shenhua. Bernie Ibini also played a full game for Shanghai SIPG and went close to equalising in the second half, only for his powerful shot to be denied by a stunning save.
Daniel Mullen was absent through illness as Dalian Aerbin were hammered 4-0 by Beijing Guoan.
In Iran, Iain Fyfe made his debut for Mes Kerman in their 1-0 loss to Saipa Karaj. Fyfe came on in the 60th minute and played the final half hour in defence.
